That’s the idea, right? Be a teacher, make a difference in the lives of kids. But some teachers have a dreadful impact on kids. I can still remember three such walking disasters out of all my years in public education, kindergarten through grad school. I recall their names, what they said to me and my classmates, and the damage I suffered at their hands. And the rest of my teachers? They were loving, smart, funny, patient, and dedicated. I also remember most of their names, what they said to me and my classmates, and the kindness they poured into my life.
Check out TEACH.org’s Facebook page for an interesting video on Bruce Farrer. He assigned his students a letter-writing task in which they recorded their thoughts and dreams. After 20 years, he sends all these letters to his former students. Mr. Farrer has been doing this for decades now. The impact on his former student’s lives is remarkable. Yes, he makes a difference.
